Digital Story-Telling
Using Images to Stimulate Creative Writing (Digital Story Telling)
“The synthesis of traditional story telling activities and digital image production stimulates students to be more creative the telling of their stories” (Jacobs, 2010, p. 202).
“Digital storytelling has become one of my students’ favorite technological activities. Not only does it allow me to integrate the curriculum in a nurturing environment where students’ unique learning styles are recognized and validated, it also allow students to think and express themselves in an environment free of fear and negative consequences because there are no wrong answers” (Kraft, 2006, p. 45)
“Combining images into slide shows or simple movies that can be presented using Microsoft Powerpoint, Photo Story 3, and Movie Maker, or Apple’s iPhoto and IMovie, gives students the opportunity to link their writing skills and technology skills. This process makes the assignment more of a project and takes away the stigma of its being just another boring writing task (Jacobs, 2010, p. 202).
“As digital storytelling enters academic mainstream, the technique shows great promise. Creating a digital story taps skills and talents in art, media production, storytelling, and project development that might otherwise lie dormant within many students but that will serve them well in school, at work, and expressing themselves personally” (Ohler, 2006, p. 47)

Pecha Kucha
Pecha Kucha is a Japanese word that translates to "chatter" It was a presentation method that was adopted by architects. The framework of 20 pictures for 20 seconds put a limit on how much they talked. It is a structured for of digital storytelling in a sense, and require the author to consider quality of images, and what he/she would like to say about them in approximately six minutes and forty seconds. Pecha Kucha meetings are gaining popularity all over and have been used to present a variety of topics. This gives a description and actually provides some great ideas for how we could use signs more efficiently in society. Inadvertently this author discusses another aspect of visual literacy and it's worth six minutes and forty seconds of your time!
There is a lot of potential for this kind of a project to offer as a unique medium with teachers and students in a junior high/senior high classroom. It could be used to bring visual images to essays, autobiographies, biographies, Inquiry projects, demonstrate how to solve a math problem, or do a research project in Science. It is a new structure for presenting information and so it would help children to give them advice and guidance on how they would work through a project like this.
